The fate of TikTok in the United States hangs in the balance as President Joe Biden prepares to leave office. According to a U.S. official, Biden will not enforce the impending nationwide ban on the popular app before his term ends. Instead, the decision will rest with incoming President Donald Trump.
The law, which mandates that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, divest its ownership or face a U.S. ban, was passed by Congress and signed by Biden last year. TikTok, boasting over 170 million American users, reportedly plans to shut down operations this Sunday unless action is taken.
In a surprising turn, Trump has expressed support for keeping TikTok available. He has already taken executive action to delay the ban for up to 90 days, citing the possibility of a negotiated resolution.
“We will put measures in place to keep TikTok from going dark,” stated Mike Waltz, Trump’s incoming national security adviser, during an interview with Fox News. Waltz emphasized that the law permits extensions if a potential deal is under negotiation.
As the transition of power unfolds, the question remains: will Trump pave the way for TikTok’s continued operation, or will the app face a permanent ban? For now, TikTok’s millions of U.S. users await a resolution to the uncertainty.
