According to CNN, the fallen officer, Bénédict Kabiru from Kenya, was part of the #Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS). He was initially reported missing after armed gang members ambushed two mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles on Tuesday in Pont-Sondé, a town in Haiti’s Artibonite region, according to an MSS statement. ⁠

Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council later confirmed Kabiru’s death, honoring his service. “This valiant police officer, engaged alongside Haitian forces to fight insecurity, made the ultimate sacrifice for a better future for our country. His bravery and commitment will never be forgotten,” the council stated. ⁠

The incident occurred as MSS and Haitian National Police forces attempted to retrieve an armored police vehicle that had become stuck in a ditch — which MSS suggested may have been intentionally dug by gangs. One of the MRAP vehicles also got stuck during the operation, while the other experienced mechanical failure. While officers worked to address the issue, they were ambushed by gang members. His death marks the second Kenyan casualty since the MSS deployment in June. Last month, another Kenyan officer was fatally wounded during an operation, also in the Artibonite region.⁠

Haiti's capital, #PortauPrince, remains mainly under gang control, with estimates suggesting that over 80% of the city is dominated by armed groups. Since the MSS arrived, gang violence has spread into rural areas, with criminal groups seizing large portions of the agriculturally vital Artibonite region. ⁠

The U.S., a key financial backer of the MSS, prioritizes Haiti’s security crisis during Secretary Rubio’s Caribbean visit. On Wednesday, Rubio is scheduled to meet with Fritz Jean, president of Haiti’s Presidential Transitional Council, in Jamaica. Many people don’t understand why there has been an increase in immigration raids even though some of them are not criminals, have already filed for asylum, have a work permit, and have a court hearing coming up. One of the Trump administration’s executive orders also calls for expanding the use of expedited removals.⁠

What is Expedited Removal? Basically, CBP Customs and Border Patrol officers were given the discretion to deport people they found at the border, especially if you were entering between designated Ports of Entry.⁠
⁠
These were usually people who did not present themselves at the international bridge and request asylum or express their HEART or return to their home country. Maybe they entered the dessert or something.⁠
⁠
Under previous administrations, expedited removal applications were for people who were apprehended within 100 miles of the border and within 14 days of entering the United States.⁠

NOW the Trump Administration has expanded this from 14 days to 2 years and from 100 miles from the BORDER throughout the United States.⁠

Individuals subject to expedited removal go through administrative removal proceedings and this removes their opportunity to present their cases before immigration judges.⁠

The order would have made expedited removal available for use to remove any alien who has been physically present in the country for less than two years.⁠

A lawsuit was filed on January 22, 2025, arguing that DHS’s expansion of the use of expedited removal under the executive order violates aliens’ rights to due process in the United States under the Fifth Amendment,⁠
violates certain federal laws, and⁠
fails to comply with the requirements of the Administrative Procedure Act.⁠
