JetBlue Airways, the only U.S. carrier offering direct flights to #Haiti from #SouthFlorida and #NewYork, has extended its suspension of daily flights to the #Caribbean nation until at least April 2025 due to ongoing civil unrest. In a statement to the @MiamiHerald on Thursday, Selma Garcia, a spokesperson for the airline, explained, "Due to the ongoing civil unrest in Haiti, we have made the decision to suspend all flights to and from the country through at least April 30." She added that the airline would "continue to monitor the situation closely and update our plans as necessary." ⁠

This decision comes after the Federal Aviation Administration (#FAA) extended its flight ban on U.S. commercial and cargo flights traveling to #PortauPrince until March 12, 2024. The extension of the flight ban was announced on the same day that #Haitian officials reopened both #ToussaintLouverture International Airport in the capital and the nearby Guy Malary terminal for domestic flights.⁠

Miami Herald reports that Haiti’s other international airport, Hugo Chávez International Airport in Cap-Haïtien, remains exempt from the FAA ban and is the only other airport with international flights, as the land border with the Dominican Republic is often challenging to navigate. Flights to Cap-Haïtien continue, including deportation flights from the United States, despite severe flooding in the region. However, the Haitian Bridge Alliance, an advocacy group, has condemned the continued deportations, arguing that they violate U.S. and international laws.⁠

#SpiritAirlines, #JetBlue Airways, and #AmericanAirlines have all suspended flights to #Haiti. The return of these flights will depend on Haiti’s ability to convince airlines and the U.S. government that conditions are safe for air travel. Until then, many travelers remain stranded or have limited options for reaching or leaving the country. ⁠
