The Federal Aviation Administration (#FAA) has extended its ban on US jetliners flying into Haiti's capital, #PortauPrince, until September 8, as reported by the @MiamiHerald. This decision comes after armed gangs opened fire on three US commercial airlines flying over Port-au-Prince's #ToussaintLouverture International Airport in November.⁠

While US air carriers can still fly over Port-au-Prince's airspace, they are prohibited from landing at the airport without prior authorization from the FAA administrator. This ban also applies to the island of La Gonave. However, people operating US-registered aircraft for a foreign carrier are exempt from this ban, allowing Haiti's locally-owned carrier, Sunrise Airways, to continue operating direct flights between Haiti and #Miami International Airport.⁠

The FAA's ban has effectively shut down Haiti's air operations, despite the main international airport being technically open. No domestic flights are operating, and only a few missionary flights, US military aircraft, and occasional charters from other countries are allowed. To depart the country, travelers must fly out of the smaller international airport in #CapHaïtien, which requires navigating gang-controlled or dangerous mountain roads. Alternatively, those with sufficient funds can pay $2,500 for a one-way seat on a private helicopter.⁠

According to the Miami Herald, JetBlue Airways has extended its suspension of flights between Port-au-Prince and JFK International Airport in New York and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport until at least June. American Airlines has suspended its Haiti operations indefinitely, while Spirit Airlines has not announced when it will resume flights to either destination.⁠

Washington, D.C.'s iconic #BlackLivesMatter Plaza mural, painted in 2020 following George Floyd's murder, is being dismantled. Crews began removing the 35-foot yellow lettering on Monday, a process expected to take six to eight weeks. ⁠

Three organizations have filed a lawsuit challenging the #Trump administration's decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for #Haitians and #Venezuelans residing in the United States.⁠

The lawsuit, filed by #HaitianAmericans United Inc., Venezuelan Association of Massachusetts, UndocuBlack Network, and four individuals, contests the administration's move to rescind the #TPS extension granted under President #JoeBiden until February 2026. This extension had provided a safe haven for individuals fleeing extreme violence, political upheaval, and natural disasters in their home countries.⁠

As a result of the administration's decision, Haitians would be required to return to Haiti by August 3, while Venezuelans would need to depart by April 2. This abrupt termination of TPS would disrupt the lives of affected individuals and have far-reaching consequences for their families and communities.⁠

Lawyers for Civil Rights, representing the plaintiffs, argue that the administration lacks the authority to revoke an already granted TPS extension. The lawsuit also alleges that the administration's decision is driven by racial bias, citing Trump's past remarks about #Haiti and African nations. During his presidency, Trump faced criticism for referring to Haiti and African countries as "s—hole countries" during a meeting with senators. Trump denied making these remarks but acknowledged having a "tough" conversation about these countries.⁠

Additionally, the lawsuit references an incident during Trump's 2020 presidential campaign, in which he perpetuated an unfounded claim that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, #Ohio, were "eating the pets of the people that live there."⁠

Haitian-American Paul Simon, a Trump supporter, disagreed with the president's move, stating, "He can't pre-emptively end something that has been granted to them." Simon, who voted for Trump three times, believes the president overstepped his authority in terminating TPS for Haitians and Venezuelans. "I think he's going to fail at this," Simon said.⁠

A small plane crashed Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of #Brethren Village, a retirement community near Lancaster Airport in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, #Pennsylvania. The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. on March 9, 2025, involving a Beechcraft Bonanza single-engine aircraft with five people on board.⁠

Witnesses reported that the plane took off from Lancaster Airport but soon veered left and nose-dived into the parking lot, resulting in a fireball and extensive damage to several vehicles. Emergency responders arrived promptly, extinguishing the flames and attending to the injured.
