GRAPHIC WARNING: Two journalists were killed and several others injured in a violent gang attack during the planned reopening of Haiti’s largest public hospital in #PortauPrince on Tuesday, according to the country’s Online Media Collective. A police officer also lost his life in the incident. ⁠

The General Hospital, which had been forced to shut down earlier this year due to gang activity, was scheduled to reopen on #Christmas Eve. As journalists gathered to cover the event, suspected gang members opened fire, disrupting the ceremony and sparking chaos. ⁠
⁠
Robest Dimanche, a spokesperson for the Online Media Collective, identified the slain journalists as Markenzy Nathoux and Jimmy Jean. Several other reporters were injured in the attack, which Dimanche attributed to the Viv Ansanm gang coalition. The Haitian Association of Journalists condemned the violence, describing it as a “macabre scene comparable to terrorism, pure and simple.” ⁠

Interim President Leslie Voltaire addressed the nation, expressing condolences to the victims, including press members and law enforcement. “I send my sympathies to the victims, the national police, and the journalists,” Voltaire said, without providing specific casualty figures. ⁠

The government later issued a statement denouncing the attack as a “heinous act” against an institution dedicated to health and life, promising a firm response to the perpetrators. Videos circulating online, purportedly from journalists trapped inside the hospital, showed two lifeless bodies on stretchers, their blood-stained clothes and press credentials visible. Other footage showed reporters lying injured on the floor. These videos have not yet been independently verified. ⁠

Street gangs control an estimated 85% of Port-au-Prince, regularly targeting key infrastructure, including the main international airport and major prisons. Johnson “Izo” André, a notorious gang leader affiliated with Viv Ansanm, released a video on social media claiming responsibility for the hospital attack. He stated that the coalition had not authorized the facility’s reopening. ⁠
