*TRIGGER WARNING* Thousands of protesters took to the streets of #PortauPrince on Wednesday, clashing with police as they voiced their frustration over escalating gang violence and the government's failure to ensure their safety. ⁠

Carrying machetes, tree branches, and palm fronds, demonstrators marched through the capital, where businesses, banks, and schools remained closed amid growing unrest. One of the protest organizers, who concealed his identity out of fear of retaliation, stated that their goal was to “take over the prime minister’s office and burn down the CPT,” referring to Haiti’s transitional presidential council headquarters. ⁠

This marks the most significant protest against Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, appointed by the council in November 2024. When demonstrators gathered outside his office, police responded with tear gas, dispersing the crowd. Some protesters fought back, throwing rocks at officers in defiance. ⁠

Public anger continues to mount as armed groups, which already control 85% of Port-au-Prince, expand their reach into previously safe neighborhoods. According to the United Nations’ International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 60,000 people were displaced in just one month** due to escalating gang violence. ⁠
⁠
Grégoire Goodstein, head of the IOM mission in Haiti, described the mass displacement as unprecedented. “We have never observed such a large number of people moving in such a short time,” he stated. ⁠

The crisis has led international experts to sound the alarm. In a March visit to Port-au-Prince, William O’Neill, the U.N. human rights commissioner’s expert on Haiti, called the city “an open-air prison”, warning that gangs are “killing and setting fire to homes, businesses, churches, and schools.” ⁠

Armed groups have also extended their attacks beyond the capital. On Monday, gangs stormed the city of Mirebalais, raiding a prison and freeing more than 500 inmates as terrified residents fled. ⁠

The federal government’s decision to terminate specific parole programs for nationals of #Cuba, #Haiti, #Nicaragua, and #Venezuela means that many individuals, including Desrivieres, must leave the United States within 30 days. His two-year stay, initially set to last until 2026, will end abruptly in April 2024, one year earlier than expected. ⁠

According to @Newsnationnow, Desrivieres met the Morris family over a decade ago through a mission program. Pastor Ralph Morris, who has led VCU Church in Ray County for 34 years, and his wife, Diana, became his sponsors, offering him a place in their family. ⁠

“They replaced my mom and dad,” Desrivieres shared, recalling how he lost his mother at age 11 and his father at age 8. Leaving #Haiti due to escalating violence, he came to the U.S. under the Refugee Parole Program, believing he would have at least two years to build a stable life. “We’ve done everything legally,” Morris said, emphasizing that Desrivieres arrived through a **government-sanctioned program** and followed all required immigration procedures. Desrivieres has a Social Security card, a full-time job, and a permanent residence. He has complied with immigration interviews, fingerprinting, and documentation requests**, yet he now faces removal with little explanation. ⁠

Adding to the complexity, the U.S. Embassy in Haiti has been closed since August 2023, making it nearly impossible for many to secure visas through other legal channels. As the deadline looms, Desrivieres’ fate remains uncertain, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of the parole program’s termination for families across the U.S.⁠

Two #Kenyan police officers deployed in #Haiti hav

Two #Kenyan police officers deployed in #Haiti have suffered severe injuries in recent clashes with armed gangs over the past week, according to three officers who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity due to security concerns. The latest casualties add to the growing challenges faced by the Multinational Security Support (#MSS) mission, which has been under increasing attacks.
Kenya initially deployed its personnel in June as part of the MSS mission, which currently comprises around 1,000 security forces, with approximately 75% being Kenyan officers. The mission's primary objective is to stabilize Haiti enough to facilitate elections by February 2026. However, from its inception, the operation has struggled with low morale and uncertainty regarding its expansion amid escalating gang violence.
The MSS recorded its first fatality in February, and just last week, a Kenyan officer was reported missing. According to the three officers, he is now presumed dead. The two injured officers were harmed during routine patrols in and around Port-au-Prince, an area largely controlled by heavily armed gangs responsible for thousands of deaths since 2021.
MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka confirmed that both officers had been airlifted to the Dominican Republic for medical treatment. Officers on the ground report that gang attacks have become more frequent, raising concerns over inadequate protective gear. One officer sustained a head injury when a bullet penetrated his helmet, while another was struck in the ear after gunfire breached the walls of an armored vehicle.
Amid growing safety concerns, twenty armored vehicles were taken out of service over the weekend after officers refused to use them, citing their inability to withstand gunfire. According to the three officers, this marks the second time a supposedly bulletproof vehicle failed to protect its occupants.
In response, a delegation from the MSS plans to visit Washington this week to discuss concerns over the quality of protective equipment with U.S. officials, according to two senior MSS officers. The United States has been the mission’s primary source of funding and equipment. #lunionsuite

Initially, the protest had been scheduled on a route approved by authorities, but around 6 p.m., the nationalist group veered off course and moved into the Haitian-dominated neighborhoods, escalating the situation further.⁠
