Pras Michél Speaks Out: “I Like Spy Movies, But I Never Wanted to Be a Spy”

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Pras Michél, a founding member of the Grammy-winning group The Fugees, opened up about his conviction in a high-profile corruption case that has left his future hanging in the balance. Facing a potential 22-year prison sentence, the 52-year-old Haitian-American rapper described the extraordinary series of events that led to his legal troubles, comparing them to a real-life spy thriller.

A Conviction That Shocked the Industry

In April 2023, Michél was convicted on ten counts, including campaign finance violations and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. The charges stemmed from allegations of funneling funds from Malaysian financier Jho Low into Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign and lobbying the Trump administration in 2017 on behalf of Chinese officials.

Reflecting on the bizarre circumstances of his case, Michél told Variety, “I like spy movies, but I never wanted to be a spy. I don’t think that’s sexy.”

The “Banana Peel” Meeting

One of the most surreal moments Michél recounted was a clandestine meeting at Manhattan’s Four Seasons Hotel, set up through a coded phrase—“banana peel”—given at the front desk. In a penthouse suite, a high-ranking Chinese official presented him with sensitive U.S. government communications. The meeting revolved around securing the release of an American prisoner detained in China. “It felt surreal,” Michél said, emphasizing that he never sought to become involved in such dealings.

The Jho Low Connection

Central to Michél’s case is his connection to Jho Low, the Malaysian financier at the heart of the $4.5 billion 1MDB financial scandal. While Michél admitted to facilitating introductions for Low, he denied being a close associate. Prosecutors allege that Michél earned over $100 million from his dealings with Low, with $80 million of his earnings seized by the U.S. government.

Fallout from the Case

Michél’s legal troubles have taken a heavy toll on his personal and professional life. “I can’t bank anywhere. I’ve been kicked out of 13 banks,” he revealed. The case has also strained his relationship with former Fugees bandmates Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. Michél is currently prohibited from traveling due to his bail restrictions, preventing him from joining the group’s European tour.

Adding to the tension, Michél has sued Hill for alleged financial mismanagement during the Fugees’ reunion tour—a claim Hill has denied, calling it “baseless.”

A Fight for Redemption

Despite his conviction, Michél remains determined to appeal the case and rebuild his life. “This isn’t the end of my story,” he said, expressing hope for a fair outcome.

As one of Haiti’s most prominent cultural figures, Pras Michél’s legal saga is a complex tale of ambition, controversy, and resilience—one that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
