Sweet Micky is set to make a brief international comeback.

Haiti’s singer-turned President Michel Martelly is returning to the stage Friday at a benefit concert in the Dominican Republic. He will sing two songs with Spanish crooner Julio Iglesias at a benefit concert in Dominican Republic’s Casa de Campo. While Martelly has made several impromptu performances in Haiti since he was elected in May 2011, this will be his first performance outside Haiti for the artist known as “Sweet Micky.”

Concert organizer George Nader says proceeds will go to the Pink and White Foundation, a charity run by Martelly and his wife, Sophia. Martelly was known for often bawdy performances before he was elected president of a country struggling to recover from a January 2010 earthquake.

According to the New York Times, Martelly was one of Haiti’s most popular performers before his election.

“In the campaign, Mr. Martelly eschewed the skirts, underwear and other outlandish outfits of his musical career in favor of tailored suits and serious talk of reforming agriculture, streamlining the delivery of humanitarian aid and restoring law and order by bringing back the military, which was disbanded more than a decade ago after a history of human rights and political abuses,” said the newspaper.

Among those expected to attend the benefit include Henry Kissinger, as well as designers Donna Karen and Dominican-born Oscar de la Renta. — Source
