Haitian athlete Sylvio Cator won the silver medal for long jump at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, becoming his country’s most successful Olympic athlete. Cator went on to become mayor of Port-au-Prince several years later.
The country’s Stade Sylvio Cator, a multi-purpose stadium, is named after him. Haiti’s other Olympic medal came in 1924, when its US-trained shooting team won a Bronze medal. The country had been under US occupation at the time.
