Haiti’s government officially reopened Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday, marking the return of operations after a month-long closure triggered by gang-related gunfire targeting aircraft. A Critical Safety Concern
The airport was shut down in mid-November following incidents where gunfire struck three commercial planes, raising serious safety concerns for both passengers and flight crews. FAA Extends U.S. Flight Ban
Despite the airport’s reopening, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced an extension of its ban on U.S. airlines flying to or from Port-au-Prince. Initially imposed as a 30-day precaution on November 12, the restriction has now been extended by an additional 90 days, pushing the ban through March 25, 2025.
The FAA’s decision reflects ongoing security concerns following repeated instances of gunfire targeting commercial planes near the airport. The safety risks have made it challenging for international airlines to consider resuming services.
Limited Air Travel Resumes Elsewhere
While the FAA maintains its ban on flights to Port-au-Prince, it has authorized operations to six other airports in northern Haiti, including Cap-Haïtien and Jacmel. These airports are considered safer, enabling limited international and domestic flights to continue in regions less affected by violence.
