On Monday, November 18, Haitian authorities unveiled the newly constructed “Vertières” military base in Tabarre, a significant development aimed at strengthening the country’s security infrastructure. The inauguration ceremony was led by General Derby Guerrier, Chief of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAD’H), who highlighted the pressing need for government support to equip soldiers and the national police with the necessary tools to restore order in areas plagued by lawlessness.
The expansive military base, named after the historic Battle of Vertières, covers several acres and is designed to house over 2,000 soldiers. According to urban planner Leslie Voltaire, the facility also has the capacity to accommodate advanced military equipment, including helicopters, signifying a step toward modernizing Haiti’s defense capabilities.
General Guerrier stressed the importance of collaboration between the military and police forces to reclaim control of territories held by armed groups. “The restoration of peace for our population is our top priority,” he stated, calling on the government to provide the resources required to ensure the success of this mission.
While proponents see the Vertières base as a critical investment in Haiti’s national security, skeptics question whether the development will effectively address the root causes of instability or deliver tangible benefits to the Haitian people.
As Haiti grapples with escalating violence and complex socio-political challenges, the new military base represents both a symbol of hope for a more secure future and a reminder of the immense work still needed to achieve lasting peace and stability.
