#TikTok voluntarily shut down its service in the U.S. late Saturday night, just hours before a Sunday deadline. The move came after the #SupremeCourt upheld a law effectively banning the platform over concerns about its ties to #China. Tens of millions of American users were cut off from access.
The law, passed by Congress last year, required TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app by Jan. 19 or face removal from U.S. app stores and hosting services. ByteDance argued that a sale was not feasible and challenged the law in court, but the Supreme Court unanimously rejected the appeal on Friday.
The ruling determined that the divest-or-ban law did not violate the free speech rights of TikTok or its 170 million U.S. users. It sided with the government’s position that China could exploit the platform to collect vast amounts of sensitive American data.
Although the #Biden administration had indicated that the incoming #Trump administration would enforce the law, TikTok proactively took itself offline before the deadline.
