Massive Wildfire Erupts in Hollywood Hills, Sparks Urgent Evacuations of Iconic Entertainment District

A rapidly spreading wildfire broke out in the Hollywood Hills on Tuesday evening, forcing authorities to issue mandatory evacuation orders for a large portion of the iconic Hollywood entertainment district. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded promptly to the flames near 2350 Solar Drive, just after 5:30 p.m., with the fire quickly escalating in size.

Fire Spreads Quickly

Initial reports indicated that by 6:30 p.m., the wildfire had already scorched at least 20 acres. The fire’s intensity grew even more significant by 8:15 p.m., reaching a staggering 50 acres in size. The blaze is primarily burning in the Runyon Canyon area, which is well-known for its scenic hiking trails and its proximity to residential neighborhoods and popular tourist destinations.

Evacuation Orders Issued

Authorities have issued evacuation orders for residents in the affected area, which is bordered by Laurel Canyon Blvd to the west, Hollywood Blvd to the south, Cahuenga Blvd/101 Freeway/Highland Ave. to the east, and Mulholland Drive to the north. The Los Angeles Emergency Alerts system has advised that those living near the fire remain vigilant and be prepared for potential additional evacuation orders as the situation develops.

Critical Situation: Rapidly Moving Flames

“This is a critical situation,” said Retired L.A. County Fire Captain Bob Goldman in an interview with KTLA. “You can see from the ridges, with embers blowing horizontally, that the fire is moving quickly, and those embers can travel significant distances.”

Aerial footage from Sky5 has captured flames leaping from the balcony of a structure near Franklin Avenue and Vista Street, highlighting the dangerous and unpredictable nature of the fire. Firefighters are on the ground, and water-dropping aircraft have been deployed to contain the flames and protect the surrounding areas.

Support for Evacuees

In response to the disaster, Uber and Lyft have announced they are offering free rides to designated shelters for evacuees through January 15, 2025. Evacuees can use the promo code “WILDFIRE25” in the Uber app or “CAFIRERELIEF25” for Lyft to redeem free rides. These free rides will not impact drivers’ earnings.

Our hearts go out to the residents and all those affected by the fire, and we are grateful for the heroic efforts of first responders working tirelessly to contain the blaze.
