Biden-Harris Administration Approves $4.5 Billion in Student Debt Relief for 60,000 Public Service Workers

The BidenHarris Administration has announced an additional $4.5 billion in student loan relief for over 60,000 public service workers nationwide. This significant expansion, made possible by critical reforms to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program, brings the total loan forgiveness granted by the administration to over $175 billion, benefiting more than 4.8 million Americans.

Of this total, $74 billion has gone to more than one million borrowers through the PSLF program alone. Today’s announcement outlines how many borrowers in each state will receive relief and the total dollar amount per state, marking an unprecedented step in the administration’s ongoing effort to provide relief to borrowers nationwide. Before President Biden’s tenure, only 7,000 public servants received PSLF debt relief.

The PSLF program forgives the remaining student loan balance for public servants—teachers, nurses, social workers, first responders, and military service members—who have made 120 qualifying monthly payments. This relief extends to borrowers who benefited from the administration’s limited PSLF waiver, which ended in October 2022, as well as those helped by ongoing regulatory improvements to the program under this administration.
