Haitian Security Leaders Meet Amid Escalating Gang Violence in Port-au-Prince

On Monday, October 21, 2024, the President of the Presidential Transitional Council, HE Leslie Voltaire, along with other council members, convened a critical working meeting with key security leaders. This included Lieutenant-General Derby Guerrier, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H), Mr. Normil Rameau, Director General of the National Police of Haiti, and senior police officers.

The primary focus of this strategic meeting was to review and enhance existing arrangements aimed at restoring order across the country. It provided an opportunity for top security officials to evaluate the alarming conditions unfolding in Port-au-Prince and various provincial towns, particularly in light of recent gang violence.

This meeting comes on the heels of escalating conflict in Port-au-Prince, particularly in the neighborhood of Solino, where police clashed with gunmen attempting to take control of one of the few remaining gang-free areas. The situation has deteriorated since Thursday, with residents fleeing their homes and pleading for assistance. Haiti’s National Police reported regaining control of several locations while actively pursuing gang members.
