Milourie Sylfrard, fondly known as “Fanm Kanal la” by her admirers, passed away on October 12, 2024. Her death, confirmed by her family during a visit from journalists, followed her transfer to the morgue shortly after 1 a.m. Born in Mont-Organisé, in northeastern Haiti, Milourie was a pillar of dedication at the Ouanaminthe Canal construction site along the #MassacreRiver, where she served as a foreman.
Milourie was recognized as one of the most passionate advocates for the canal project, which she viewed as essential to the region’s agricultural and economic future. “The construction of the canal is of utmost importance,” she often told the media, emphasizing that it symbolized more than infrastructure—it represented hope for improved living conditions for the community.
According to @Juno7haiti, her final days were sudden and unexpected. On Thursday, October 10, Milourie complained of chest pains and was taken to the hospital. After a day of tests that revealed no serious concerns, she was discharged. However, her condition deteriorated later that evening, leading to her untimely passing. Her family, shocked by the sudden turn of events, shared that she had always been in good health with no prior signs of illness.
Milourie tragically lost both of her children shortly after their births and leaves behind no surviving offspring. Her death has cast a shadow of grief over the community, which remembers her as a fierce and determined woman willing to sacrifice everything for a project she deemed crucial for the region’s future. We extend our condolences to her family, friends, and the entire community. Milourie’s legacy of perseverance and dedication will not be forgotten. 🇭🇹
